About Arnsberg Forest Nature Park

Arnsberg Forest Nature Park (Naturpark Arnsberger Wald) is located in the Sauerland region of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Covering approximately 482 square kilometers, it is one of the largest continuous forest areas in the state. The park’s landscape is dominated by dense mixed forests, primarily comprising beech, oak, spruce, and pine, and it sits within a varied topography of rolling hills, ridges, and valleys carved by rivers such as the Möhne and Ruhr. The park’s natural environment supports diverse wildlife including red deer, wild boar, foxes, and numerous bird species, making it an excellent spot for wildlife viewing. Historically, the forest has been used for timber production, hunting grounds, and recreation; today it balances conservation with sustainable forest use. Visitors are drawn to the park by its extensive trail systems featuring over 2,000 kilometers of marked paths for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Popular outdoor activities include forest bathing, nature photography, and fishing in the park’s reservoirs and rivers. Notable landmarks within the park include the Möhne Reservoir, a major water resource and leisure destination, and the historic Rheder tower and Hohensyburg ruins just outside the park boundaries. Quiet picnic spots, well-maintained visitor facilities, and educational information centers contribute to the park’s appeal for families and nature enthusiasts. The combination of pristine forest, clean freshwater bodies, and cultural heritage makes Arnsberg Forest Nature Park a well-rounded protected area for both casual visitors and dedicated outdoor adventurers.
